What to Know
- The Hide Google AI Overviews extension is an easy way to remove AI from Google Search in Chrome or Firefox.
- You can also change the browser settings to force queries to run through Google’s Web tab instead of the All tab.
This article explains how to remove AI from Google Search… kind of. Technically, it can’t be turned off, at least not officially. Below are some workarounds that will hide AI Overviews in some situations.
How to Hide Google AI Overviews on Desktop
There are two primary ways to remove AI from Google Search.
Use an Extension
The fastest and most effective method is to install a browser extension. Hide Google AI Overviews is a great option that has zero configuration settings; just install it to instantly hide AI Overviews.
Edit Chrome’s Settings
The other method is to edit your search engine settings in Chrome. This is the next best option if you don’t want to install an extension.
After following these steps, you’ll be able to use the navigation bar at the top of Chrome to search on Google without seeing AI Overviews.
-
Open Chrome’s settings by selecting the three dots at the top right and then choosing Settings at the bottom of the menu.
-
Select Search engine on the left.
-
Select Manage search engines and site search on the right.
-
Scroll down and select Add next to the Site search section.
-
Fill out the form with this information, and then select Add:
- Name: Hide Google AI
- Shortcut: @web
- URL: {google:baseURL}search?q=%s&udm=14
-
Select the three dots next to Hide Google AI, and then select Make default.
-
Google AI Overviews is now hidden. To test it out, open a new tab and enter some search terms into the navigation bar at the top of Chrome.
The results now open directly to the Web section instead of All, which is where AI Overview lives.
If you ever need to undo these changes, return to chrome://settings/searchEngines and change the default search engine to Google (or any other website).
How to Remove AI From Google Search on Mobile
The Chrome mobile app doesn’t support the same custom search engine settings as its desktop counterpart. Fortunately, there’s a handy website that can help us with that.
These directions work for Chrome on Android and iOS.
-
Open TenBlueLinks.org from your mobile device.
-
Open a new tab and search for something (anything) on Google.
-
Tap the three dots in the corner of the app and then choose Settings from the menu.
-
Tap Search engine.
-
Select Google Web. Now, all web searches made through the navigation bar will jump to Google’s Web tab, hiding AI Overviews in the process.
