The Palmshell SliM X4L is a compact desktop computer that’s about the size of a very thick smartphone. But it’s a full-fledged computer with an Intel N100 quad-core processor, support for Windows or most GNU/Linux distributions, and a decent set connectivity and I/O options.

At the heart of the system is a Radxa X4 single-board computer (which has similar specs), but the advantage to buying one of Radxa’s Palmshell-branded systems is that you get a complete computer with memory, storage, and a chassis. The Palmshell SLiM X4L is available now from AliExpress or ARACE with prices starting at around $135 for a model with 8GB of RAM, 32GB of eMMC storage, and a 128GB PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSD.

The new model is basically an update over the previous-gen Palmshell SLiM X2L that hit the streets earlier this year, but the new model should deliver significantly better performance thanks to a faster processor and memory and speedier wireless networking features.

Its Intel Alder Lake-N processor should bring a big boost to CPU and graphics performance when compared to the Gemini Lake Refresh chip in the older model. Instead of LPDDR4-2400 memory, the new X4L has LPDDR5-4800 RAM. And instead of WiFi 5 and Gigabit Ethernet, it supports WiFi 6E and 2.5 GbE Ethernet.

The new model also features three USB 3 ports and one USB 2 port, two HDMI 2.0 ports, and a 3.5mm audio jack. It supports 12V/3A power input from a USB-C PD power adapter… but you’ll need to provide your own, as Radxa doesn’t include one in the box.

RAM is soldered to the mainboard, which means it’s not user upgradeable. And while the system technically supports up to 32GB of memory, the only models available for purchase so far come with just 8GB.

Storage can be upgraded, thanks to an M.2 2280 slot.

While the top and sides of the case have fins that look like those you’d find on a fanless computer, the Palmshell X4L does have a 7000 RPM fan for active cooling.
